2024 Youth Olympic luge competition continues

GANGWON, South Korea - The 2024 Youth Olympic Winter Games continued with the men’s singles race, followed by the women’s doubles competition. 

The day kicked off with Orson Colby (Riverton, Utah), the lone entrant in the men’s singles competition. The Riverton High School student placed 14th with a time of one minute, 36.114 seconds. 

The gold medalist was Italy’s Leon Haselrieder, who clocked a two-run combined time of 1:32.356. His father Oswald won a bronze medal in doubles at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy. Austrian Paul Socher took silver in 1:32.541, followed by bronze medalist Philip Brunner of Italy. Brunner took gold in yesterday’s men’s doubles event with Manuel Weissensteiner. 

In the women’s doubles event, Sadie Martin (Vermontville, N.Y.) and Haidyn Bunker (West Farmington, Ohio)did not cross the finish line after a crash in their second heat. 

Italy’s gold streak continued with Alexandra Oberstolz and Katharina Kofler winning gold in 1:36.471. Oberstolz is the daughter of four-time Olympian Christian Oberstolz and Anastasia Oberstolz-Antonova, a 2002 Olympian. She also took silver in the women’s singles event held yesterday, January 20. 

The family affair continued on the women’s doubles podium for Austria, with yesterday’s bronze medalist in singles Marie Riedl teaming with Nina Lerch to win the silver medal in 1:37.141. Riedl and Lerch got the better of their older sisters, Lina Riedl and Anna Lerch, who took bronze in 1:37.378.

Youth Olympic Luge racing will conclude the team relay on January 23.
