Tonn, Coates, Gable and Salgado win Norton Youth National Titles

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – Aside from optimal eclipse viewing, the Adirondack mountains continue to serve as a winter sports hub, even in April. 

At the Olympic Sports Complex luge track, the Norton Youth National Championships were held on the roughly one-mile run. 48 of the nation’s top boys and girls competed in two age groups: Youth A for ages 15-17 and Youth B for kids 14 and under. 

In the Youth A women’s race, Talia Tonn (Cecil, Wisc.) won with a two-run combined time of one minute 31.765 seconds. Caylin Weaver (Indianapolis, Ind.) was second in 1:32.359, while third place was taken by Sadie Martin (Vermontville, N.Y.). 

The Youth A men’s gold medal went to Seth Coates (Potsdam, N.Y.). He crossed the finish line in 1:32.154. Josh Berzowski (Pulaski, Wisc.) was the silver medalist in 1:32.950, with Andrew Robertson (South Jordan, Utah) taking bronze in 1:34.121.

Tristan Gable (Camano Island, Wash.) topped the time sheets for the Youth B men’s division, stopping the clock in 1:35.932. Maxim Zayonc (Lake Placid, N.Y.), the son of two Olympic luge athletes, finished .015 behind Gable in 1:35.947. The bronze went to Landon Kozik (Norfolk, Mass.) in 1:37.896. 

The Youth B women’s race saw Delilah Salgado Ashland, Mass.) victorious in 1:36.907. The silver medal went to Miriel Schomaker (Park City, Utah) with a time of 1:42.089. The bronze medalist was Emmelina Campos (Clarendon Hills, Ill.) in 1:43.272. 

After the race, 1,666 lacrosse balls were released down the luge track as a part of the team’s annual Running of the Balls fundraiser. Details are available at www.usaluge.org

One race remains on the USA Luge season calendar: the Norton Masters National Championship on April 13.
