Schomaker, Roberts win Youth B titles

PARK CITY, Utah – Talia Tonn and Ben Wingfield emerged as the winners of the 2025 Norton Youth A National Championships held at the Utah Olympic Park, the site of the 2002 and 2034 Olympic Winter Games. Youth A athletes are between the ages of 14 and 18. 

The Youth B Championships, for athletes aged 13 and under were won by Miriel Schomaker and William Roberts. 

The event was a family affair, with the sons, daughters and sisters of past and current luge athletes featured on the podium. 

In the Youth A women’s division, Tonn (Cecil, Wisc.) had a four-run combined time of 2 minutes, 48.675 seconds. This was her second consecutive Youth A title. Breckan Luedke (Menasha, Wisc.) was second in 2:49.023, Caylin Weaver (Indianapolis, Indiana) was third in 2:49.678. 

Wingfield (Park City, Utah), the 2023 Youth B title winner, won the Youth A men’s competition in 3:00.732. Chris Brand (Downers Grove, Ill.) was second in 3:01.338. His mother, Becky Wilczak Brand, placed fifth in the 2002 Olympic luge competition held here. Andrew Robertson (South Jordan, Utah) was third 3:02.107. 

Schomaker (Park City, Utah) stopped the clock in 2:57.240 to take the Youth B women’s title. Her sister Macey competes as a member of the Junior National Team. Sophia Etheridge (Westerville, Ohio) was second in 2:58.251, with Estelle Walden (Lake Placid, N.Y.) third in 2:59.973. Walden is the daughter of two Olympic luge athletes, Ashley Hayden-Walden and Bengt Walden. 

The Youth B men’s division winner was William Roberts (Holliston, Mass.) in 2:55.485. Maxim Zayonc, the son of 1983 World Champion Miro Zayonc and two-time Olympian Marketa Jeriova-Zayonc, was second in 2:58.870. Jonathan Sigg (Columbus, Ohio) was third in 3:00.928. 

In a mixed category race, Liam Perl (Orem, Utah) finished first in 2:55.198. Sam Hazell (Medway, Mass.) was second in 2:57.680, while Colin Peterson (Columbus, Ohio) was third in 2:57.694. 

USA Luge has also taken Isabela Aponte, who competes for Puerto Rico, under their wing. In conjunction with the U.S. Youth Championships, Aponte took part in the Puerto Rican Junior Championship. The 2024 Youth Olympian trains and travels with the Junior National Team during the season and off-season.

Following the conclusion of the IBSF Bobsled and Skeleton World Championships in Lake Placid this week, the U.S. National Team will train in Lake Placid for five days from March 17-21. USA Luge Fantasy Camps and the Masters National Championship held March 24-30 will wrap up the season.
